Coffee is a worldwide go-to drink for many when they need a boost. Whether it's a morning ritual to kickstart your day or a tool to help you power through work, coffee may seem like a convenient way to excel your productivity. 


How Coffee Energizes your Brain

Coffee contains an ingredient caffeine which is a natural stimulant. It functions by blocking adenosine – a chemical in your  brain that can make you feel tired – and in doing so, you end up feeling more awake and focused (Ruxton, 2008). 

Additionally, Caffeine also increases dopamine release which brings about a surge of energy and feelings of motivation.  


How much Coffee is too Much? 

Although coffee can sharpen your focus and improve your mood, over consuming doesn’t equate to better productivity outcomes.  


Over Consumption may lead to:

  • Jitters: Feeling shaky or anxious 

  • Sleep issues: caffeine stays in your body for hours after consumption, which may ake it hard to sleep if you drink coffee nearer to bedtime 

  • Energy crashes: (also known as the caffeine crash) big doses of caffeine can cause energy dips later in the day 


Tips for Getting the Most out of Coffee

  • Time your intake: Enjoy coffee either in the morning or early afternoon to avoid disrupting your sleep at night

  • Pair it with snacks: Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can lead to jitters. A nutritious snack can help avoid this. 

  • Listen to your body: If you feel anxious or are experiencing disturbed sleep or frequent caffeine crashes, try lowering your intake


Coffee can be greater for productivity but balance is key! When enjoyed mindfully, it can help you stay alert, focused, and ready to tackle your day!
